So we started hunting around and found what we thought might be a promising lead: police reports in the area near where Chapman lived. One problem: They needed to be picked up in person. And, well, Nashville isn't exactly driving distance to Miami.

Baseball writer Jay Jaffe has developed a stat called JAWS (Jaffe Wins Above Replacement Score). By averaging a player’s career WAR with their total WAR from their seven best seasons, JAWS is often used to determine the worthiness of a player for the Hall of Fame. Allen’s JAWS is 52.3, 17th-highest among third basemen in history, although slightly lower than the average for the third basemen already inducted (55.7). Jaffe still believes Allen deserves induction.MLB Face Coverings Online Sale

Kurkjian: My favorite trade of the winter meetings occurred on Dec. 4, 1988. The Orioles, the team I covered for The Baltimore Sun, sent star first baseman Eddie Murray to the Dodgers for pitchers Jay Howell and Brian Holton, and shortstop Juan Bell. Murray would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer just from his 12 years in Baltimore. It was an enormous deal for both teams, but it had been kept so secretive until we discovered that Roland Hemond, the GM of the Orioles, and Fred Claire of the Dodgers, had met in a hotel in Chicago shortly before the meetings to discuss the deal. When I called Hemond in his hotel room, he said, "You ask tough questions," and answered none of them. Hemond is an all-time favorite; he did everything honestly, by the book. So when I walked with him on his way to the podium to officially announce the Murray trade, I asked for the third player the Orioles were getting. Hemond said, "Sorry, I can't tell you until the deal is done.'' Ten seconds later, he announced the trade.

“They really turned on him after the Thomas fight,” Phillies manager Gene Mauch said in an interview years later with SABR. “From there, if he did one little thing wrong, they would see it as so much worse because it was Allen. They got it in their heads that this was a bad guy, and they booed his every move.” Though Allen later claimed to have buried the hatchet with Thomas — the two even exchanged Christmas cards for several years — many fans never forgave him.Houston Astros Face Coverings

Doolittle: I go back to one of the most epic deals in winter meetings history, when the Blue Jays sent McGriff and Fernandez to San Diego for Carter and Alomar. Toronto won back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993, with Alomar serving as a catalyst and Carter providing a historic World Series-ending homer in 1993.Los Angeles Angels Face Coverings

But the Phillies didn’t let the fight slide, releasing Thomas shortly afterward. Thomas, infuriated, took his complaints to the media. He insisted that Allen was the one at fault and painted himself as the victim. Thomas claimed that he had tried several times to apologize, but Allen wouldn’t listen. Allen “cost me my job,” he told the Philadelphia Tribune. Allen, meanwhile, was forbidden from defending himself. His teammates were threatened with a $1,500 fine if they spoke to the media. For Allen, the fine would be $2,500 (roughly $20,563 in 2020 dollars), more than 10% of his $20,000 salary.Detroit Tigers Face Coverings
