BRUSSELS, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Seasonally adjusted Gross domestic product (GDP) in the eurozone expanded by 0.2 percent in the third quarter of 2014 from the previous quarter, with its two biggest economies German and France both narrowly escaped a new recession, according to flash estimates published by the European Union (EU) statistical office Eurostat on Friday.

Meanwhile, the economy in the 28-nation European Union (EU) expanded 0.3 percent from the previous quarter, the statistics office said.

Technically, since two consecutive quarters of falling GDP was defined as recession, both Germany and France escaped from a new recession.

Figures show that in Europe's powerhouse Germany, the GDP increased by 0.1 percent in the third quarter, following a contraction of 0.1 percent in the second quarter.

French economy expanded by 0.3 percent in the period from July to September after shrinking by 0.1 percent in the previous quarter.

While the GDP of Italy recorded a 0.1 percent of contraction in the third quarter after a 0.2 percent shrinking in the previous quarter thus the third largest economy in the eurozone was trapped into a new recession.

In contrast, most peripheral countries continue to grow at relatively strong rates with Greek economy posting an increase of 0.7 percent quarter-on-quarter, Spain up at 0.5 percent.

Analysis said though the overall 0.2 percent increase of GDP in the eurozone was more strongly than expected Womens Richard Panik Jersey , the economy of the 18-nation bloc remains sluggish and could need more stimulus.

"In such a loose monetary context today's figures are a great disappointment and highlight the need for fiscal expansion to support efforts on the monetary side," said Danae Kyriakopoulou, economist at the Center for Economics and Business Research in Britain.

TOKYO, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Tuesday his plans to dissolve the lower house of parliament on Friday and hold a general election on Dec. 14, vowing to step down as the nation's leader if the ruling bloc fails to secure a majority vote in the most powerful chamber.

Abe told a news conference that his decision was based on his hopes to gain public support for delaying a hike in the nation's consumption tax from October 2015 as per the previous administration's charter, by 18-month to April 2017.

The move, widely expected following a monumental contraction in the nation's gross domestic product released Monday, according to Abe, was based on clear economic indicators that the world's third- largest economy is far from returning to a recovery path and fears that proceeding with a second tax hike to 10 percent, following April's increase from 5 to 8 percent, which severely impeded private consumption, corporate investment Womens Niklas Hjalmarsson Jersey , pressured industrial production and saw Japan's key export sector clobbered, would lead to continued deflationary constraints.

The prime minister said that an extra budget for fiscal 2014 will be crafted in a bid to urgently stimulate the economy and encourage increased consumption, and, contrary to some leading economists' advice, Abe said the second round of increase to the sales tax will definitely go ahead in April 2017, regardless of the economic situation at the time.

On Oct. 1, 2013, Abe announced he would go ahead with the first sales tax hike the nation has seen since 1997. Then Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto saw the nation plunge into recession after a two- percentage hike and was duly ousted as leader and Abe's aggressive monetary policy could see history repeat itself.

Following two decades of deflationary stagnation, punctuated by rising living costs, falling salaries, ballooning social security costs as the number of elderly citizens here increases and the passing on of public debt from administration to administration -- currently amounting to more than twice the size of Japan's economy and the highest in the industrialized world -- political and economic observers attest that he has failed to avoid Hashimoto's pitfall.

Abe's decision to up the tax levy in this April triggered two quarters of economic contraction. Leading economists like Societe Generale's chief Japan economist Takuji Aida intimated that Abe's lofty attempts to rescue Japan from economic malaise were overly zealous and too premature for an economy mired in deflation and only showing fledgling signs of an embryonic recovery.

Aida said the move to increase the levy in April before the economy had completely recovered from deflation was an error in judgment, adding that in all likelihood the latest GDP data may be a harbinger of a contraction for the whole of fiscal 2014.
